In the past two decades, the Argo Program has collected, processed, and distributed over two million vertical profiles of temperature and salinity from the upper two kilometers of the global ocean. A similar number of subsurface velocity observations near 1,000 dbar have also been collected. This paper recounts the history of the global Argo Program, from its aspiration arising out of the World Ocean Circulation Experiment, to the development and implementation of its instrumentation and telecommunication systems, and the various technical problems encountered. We describe the Argo data system and its quality control procedures, and the gradual changes in the vertical resolution and spatial coverage of Argo data from 1999 to 2019. The accuracies of the...

Assessing chronic fish health: An application to a case of an acute exposure to chemically treated crude oil ArchiMer
Mauduit, Florian; Domenici, P.; Farrell, A. P.; Lacroix, C.; Le Floch, S.; Lemaire, P.; Nicolas-kopec, A.; Whittington, M.; Zambonino-infante, Jose-luis; Claireaux, Guy.
Human alteration of marine ecosystems is substantial and growing. Yet, no adequate methodology exists that provides reliable predictions of how environmental degradation will affect these ecosystems at a relevant level of biological organization. The primary objective of this study was to develop a methodology to evaluate a fish’s capacity to face a well-established environmental challenge, an exposure to chemically dispersed oil, and characterize the long-term consequences. Therefore, we applied high-throughput, non-lethal challenge tests to assess hypoxia tolerance, temperature susceptibility and maximal swimming speed as proxies for a fish’s functional integrity. These whole animal challenge tests were implemented before (1 month) and after (1 month)...

Assessing the Impact of Changing Climate on Crop Water Requirements in Nigeria. CIGR Journal
Ilesanmi, Oluwaseun Ayodele.
Climate change is a phenomenon most of the world is recently coming to terms with but unfortunately, the African region is yet to fully understand and prepare for its effects. The change is predicted to herald positive results likewise potentially severe consequences for global food security. This study aims to improve the understanding of the impact these changes being experienced in the Nigerian climate system will have on Crop Water Requirements (CWR) for optimal productivity. Five statistically downscaled and bias-corrected Global Climate Models (GCMs): CCCMA, NOAA, MIROC, ICHEC, and NCC were applied in the estimation of CWR through the period 1985–2100 under the Representative Concentration Pathway RCP8.5. These were used to produce values of crop...

Consequences of exposure to polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), toxic components of crude oil, on fish has been widely documented due to their ecological and economical importance. However, although forming a valuable and consistent body of knowledge, use of these data in spill response is limited. Objective of the present study was thus to facilitate the translation of published data into information of operational value. For this, we investigated the dose‐response relationship between dispersant‐treated oil exposure and ecologically‐relevant consequences by combining laboratory and field experiments. Effects were examined over almost a year using juveniles of the slow growing, commercially important European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax). Moreover, a...

Base temperature for leaf appearance and phyllochron of selected strawberry cultivars in a subtropical environment Bragantia
Rosa,Hamilton Telles; Walter,Lidiane Cristine; Streck,Nereu Augusto; Andriolo,Jerônimo Luiz; Silva,Michel Rocha da; Langner,Josana Andréia.
Leaf development is characterized by the appearance of new leaves and is related to crop leaf area index, which affects the interception of solar radiation used for photosynthesis and biomass production and ultimately defines crop yield. The objectives of this paper were to estimate the base temperature for leaf appearance and to determine the phyllochron of two strawberry cultivars considering several planting dates. A two-year field experiment was conducted during 2008 and 2009 in Santa Maria (RS). The cultivars Arazá (early) and Yvapitá (late) were used at three planting dates in both years. Base temperature (Tb) was estimated using the Mean Square Error (MSE) approach of the regression between accumulated leaf number (LN) and accumulated thermal time...

Behavior of Staphylococcus aureus and autochthone microbiota in fresh sausages added of sodium nitrite and stored under refrigeration Ciência Rural
Correia,Lucyanne Maria Moraes; Pereira,Juliano Gonçalves; Pinto,José Paes de Almeida Nogueira; Barcellos,Vinicius Cunha; Bersot,Luciano dos Santos.
Fresh sausages are cured meat products that may be contaminated with Staphylococcus aureus during the manufacturing procedure, which is frequently related with inadequate handling practices. The use of nitrite in meat products has proven efficacy against Clostridium botulinum, and studies indicate that bactericidal action against S. aureus depends on factors that are intrinsic and extrinsic to the product. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the effect of nitrite concentration, and pH on S. aureus and psychrotrophic autochthone microbiota in fresh sausages stored at different times and temperatures. Fresh sausage were produced at nitrite concentrations 50, 150 and 200ppm and contaminated with S. aureus. The sausages were storage at...

Behaviour and orcadian rhythm of the fish bathygobius soporator Valenciennes (Gobiidae) under the influence of environmental salinity and temperature Zoologia
Fanta,Edith.
The behavioural patterns and their cireadian rhythms may be adaptive to the peculiar environmental conditions of subtropical brackish waters where Ba-thygobius soporator Valenciennes, 1837 live. Adult fish were caught at the southern Brazilian coast from mangrove rivers and rocky shores in a bay, where temperature and water salinity vary during the day and through the year. Observation on the behaviour of the animals was undertaken in salinity 8.5ppt, 17.0ppt, 25.5ppt and 34.0ppt, each one in temperatures of 18ºC and 28ºC. Temperature and salinity affect the frequency and intensity of some of the behavioural events, more than its pattern or rhythm. Swimming is rare, decreasing along the day and with temperature increase, being even lower at low salinity;...

Calibration methods for the Hargreaves-Samani equation Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Ferreira,Lucas Borges; Cunha,Fernando França da; Duarte,Anunciene Barbosa; Sediyama,Gilberto Chohaku; Cecon,Paulo Roberto.
ABSTRACT The estimation of the reference evapotranspiration is an important factor for hydrological studies, design and management of irrigation systems, among others. The Penman Monteith equation presents high precision and accuracy in the estimation of this variable. However, its use becomes limited due to the large number of required meteorological data. In this context, the Hargreaves-Samani equation could be used as alternative, although, for a better performance a local calibration is required. Thus, the aim was to compare the calibration process of the Hargreaves-Samani equation by linear regression, by adjustment of the coefficients (A and B) and exponent (C) of the equation and by combinations of the two previous alternatives. Daily data from 6...

CALIBRATION OF THE HARGREAVES-SAMANI EQUATION FOR SPECIFIC PERIODS OF THE YEAR IN THE MUNICIPALITY OF JAÍBA-MG, BRAZIL Engenharia na Agricultura
Duarte, Anunciene Barbosa; Ferreira, Lucas Borges; dos Santos, Edson Fagne.
Reference evapotranspiration (ET0) explains the climatic effects on crop water demand. The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) recommends the Penman Monteith equation as a standard method for estimating ET0. However, because this equation requires a large amount of meteorological data, it has limited application. An alternative is the Hargreaves-Samani (HS) equation, which only requires air temperature data, and can be calibrated to specifc locations and periods. The present study aimed to calibrate the empirical parameters (coeffcients and exponent) of the HS equation for specifc periods of the year, as well as evaluate the behavior and calibration of this equation throughout the year in the municipality of Jaíba-MG, Brazil. The daily meteorological...
